Extreme Weight Loss - Meredith's Marathon Journey
There are two special things I learned about Meredith on tonight's Extreme Weight Loss.
First off, she is completely adorable. And secondly - she is a VERY STRONG WOMAN.
Meredith is only 24, but she shows more wisdom than many people twice her age. Oh, she's still a girl who wants to have fun - as her Baywatch fantasies prove - but she also has learned how to deal with the curveballs that life can throw...even if they were pitched at birth when you're way too young to know why.
One of my favorite things about EWL (yes, the show has shortened its title, probably to help us all keep our tweets under 140 characters) is that one or two people get to focus on their personal journeys for the year, without competing against anyone except themselves. Of course I love my Biggest Loser...but some people thrive better when they don't have to "play the game" and can just concentrate on the main thing - physical and emotional health. For Meredith, this format perfectly fit her situation.
Meredith was given up for adoption at birth, and her parents always loved her. But she always felt like she didn't really fit into the family, because she was so different from them, especially in size. Her sister is her parents' biological child, and has always been the "thin one". Although Meredith's dad had put on some weight over the years, her mom and sister remained thin while Meredith only got bigger. Her struggle with not knowing her birth mom or why she gave her up played a major role in the weight gain. She wanted to lose the weight not only for herself, but also to prepare herself for the chance that she might get to meet her biological mother.
Chris showed up at a kids' talent show rehearsal that Meredith was in charge of, surprising her by walking onstage dressed on a carrot suit! It was just too cute, and just right because it made the kids feel comfortable with the surprise. He promised that he would take good care of Meredith while she was gone and she would be back soon. I'm sure the kids are super proud of Miss Meredith.
At her first weigh-in in California, Meredith stood at 314 pounds. She was once over 400, but she lost weight and had "Believe It, Be It 155" tattooed on her stomach to keep her motivated toward her goal of 155 pounds. She put some of the weight back on, and I'm sure she felt as if her tattoo was mocking her at times as she went in the opposite direction of her goal. Chris decided that 155 would still be her goal for this year-long journey. (By the way, "Believe It, Be It" was/is the motto of Ali Vincent, the first female Biggest Loser. It's also the title of her book. I'm betting that's where Meredith got the idea!)
At the beginning, there were times Meredith wasn't so sure of herself - especially running on the beach the first day to the tower and back. She broke down halfway through, with it really hitting her that she felt unloved from the beginning, knowing that she was given away. Chris sent her home after the first week to complete the first 90 days at home with her family.
That proved to be a problem, as her family tried to support her but at times didn't understand what she needed. Her sister really didn't get it - she brought cookies and snacks into the house that Meredith couldn't eat and kept them in the pantry where they would tempt her. I know it's hard for some people who don't struggle with their weight to understand why something like this would be such a big deal...even when it's explained to them. Chris wound up coming to town after 45 days to help Meredith stay on track for the first phase. She needed to lose 80 pounds - and beat that by losing 84!
Chris decided that Meredith would need to lose 50 pounds in phase two, and she would train for a marathon. She wasn't totally sure about that, since even though she'd become a runner, she had never run more than 10 miles. One thing that helped her focus was her sister moving out into her own place. It made things easier for her (and her parents) to keep their eyes on the prize. She didn't hit the 50 - but she did lose 32 pounds. I'm sure the torn meniscus and accompanying knee pain that developed didn't help.
Meredith and Chris did run the marathon, with support from her parents and friends. At about 19 miles her knee gave her a lot of trouble, along with her other leg which she favored because of the injury. But Meredith never quit; she slowed it down to a walk or jog at times but finished the entire 26.2 miles strong. It built her confidence even more.
During all of this, Meredith found the courage to write a letter to her birth mom, in hopes that they would get to meet. She didn't hear back from her, but Chris got some information from a private investigator to help Meredith find peace. There was a picture of her mom, along with one of her mom's run-down house. Chris thought that maybe mom was embarrassed about her living situation and wasn't ready to meet her daughter. Meredith found herself OK with that - she still hopes to meet her one day but is at peace with her past and herself. She realizes that they may not get to meet...and if that's the case she will still be fine. She also realized her parents really do love and support her, no matter what.
At the end of phase three Meredith weighed 176. Chris wanted to hold off on the skin surgery until she reached her 155 goal, because that way she still had the tattoo as a reminder until then. At first she was disappointed, but it wound up only making her more determined to reach her goal. Chris did have a special treat for her though...he brought Nicole Eggert from Baywatch to the beach where Meredith ran the very first day, and the two women ran together. Nicole has had her own weight struggle, so she was happy to come out to support Meredith. Now THAT'S a true role model.
At last it was time for the big reveal. Meredith stepped out to greet her family and friends in a gorgeous blue dress and shiny silver shoes - but the true sparkle came through her eyes and smile. She overcame so much to get to this point, and looking out among her loved ones she could finally see the light bulb go off for her sister. She gets it now!
Oh, and the 155? Meredith hit it right on the nose. Quite appropriate to go with the tattoo! Now she won't need it though, since she will have the skin surgery and it will be gone along with all of the excess weight.
Now Meredith can focus on new goals - and I know there won't be any stopping her now!

Now For The Positive - Biggest Loser Favorites & A Special Call Out!

I promised yesterday that after we were done with our Rulon-induced migraines I would post about the OTHER happenings of Tuesday night's episode. These are much more fun to write about!!!
This week was also Favorites Week, so three of the most inspiring former contestants stopped by to help our friends in Season 11. Ali Vincent, Sam Poueu, and Tara Costa were on hand to give food tips and bust everyone's butts in the gym. It gave me a thought - since Jillian is leaving at the end of this season, why not hire a former contestant who is still living the healthy lifestyle and can put the new contestants through the paces just like they went through? Obviously they should get certified if they aren't already, but they would certainly be able to relate to life on the ranch. THe ones that were there this week did an amazing job. Just a thought...hope you're listening, NBC!
This week a favorite challenge was also brought back. I'm sure you remember the car pulling challenge of Tara's season, so the Season 11 Seven and Tara did it again! Tara and Rulon had a photo finish close enough to rival the Kentucky Derby, but Tara pulled it out by a nose. (Now THAT's what I call horsepower...who needs engines or ponies!) Tara proved that she is still a force to be reckoned with a few seasons later, and she won a donation to her charity, the Inspire Change Foundation. If you loved the T-shirt Tara was wearing on the show, you can order one at the Marika Fitness site...part of the proceeds goes to Inspire Change. Currently sizes go up to XL, but ICF is looking for someone to do larger sizes as well. Let's help kids get and stay fit!
Speaking of inspiring change, you may remember that Justin from this season began his own mission once he got home from the ranch. You can now order his "Justin's Call Out" T-shirts, which start at size Medium and go up to 4XL. Checks, money orders, and Paypal are accepted...and there are also tank tops available for summer. The T-shirts are $15 plus $2 for shipping. Please contact Justin's lovely wife Julie at justbjulie@yahoo.com to order or get additional information.
So let's really inspire change...in ourselves, our families and friends, and in our communities. Fitness rules!!!

Biggest Loser...Learning to Lose at HOME???

Yesterday's episode was the last show before next week's finale. The Final 4 were sent off to lose weight at home for 30 days, and Alison also informed them that they would be running a marathon when they got back to the ranch, before that final weigh-in.
We got to see glimpses of how each of the contestants dealt with having to stick to their healthy lifestyles while they were back with their families and friends. Except for one thing...Koli decided to deal with with his situation by NOT dealing with it. He stayed in Las Vegas for the month and hired a personal trainer so he could focus on winning and not have to deal with the same everyday life and distractions that the other 3 contestants did. To me...this is cheating. Everyone else played by the rules, and Koli is going to have to try to live his new way at home sooner or later.
The marathon was quite inspiring, and I always love seeing people from previous seasons come to help the current players out. Matt Hoover ran with Daris, who really pushed himself and completed the race in 4 hours and 2 minutes. He completely blew away the old record time of 4:55 set by Tara Costa from Season 7. Sione Fa ran with Koli, and he came in second, a good 2 hours after Daris. Ashley and Michael decided they were going to finish the race together, and they had Ali Vincent and Mike Morelli by their sides. All of the contestants also had a family member join them for the last mile or so, and it was a very emotional scene. Daris mentioned that he's been strong all along, but didn't really realize it until now. I think that happens to many of us. We don't believe in ourselves enough at first, but as time goes on when see that we always had that strength we needed to accomplish our goals. Ashley said it best...when she said that she is finally the girl she always wanted to be.
At the weigh-in, Michael had a special moment when he saw that he now weighed 299. He had broken the 300 pound barrier! He and Ashley were the top 2 and secured their spots in the finale. Koli and Daris fell below the yellow line. Daris actually gained 2 pounds while at home. He admitted that he focused really hard on the marathon, but gave in to late night eating. What happened to Daris is a good lesson for all of us. A lot of people think that if you are running, especially marathons, that you can eat whatever you want because you're exercising so much. Keeping to a healthy eating schedule is just as important as the running is for your body. You do not have license to eat everything you want .
America gets to vote whether Daris or Koli will be in the finals with Michael and Ashley. My votes all went to Daris. Some people will argue that Koli should get the spot because he lost weight and Daris gained. I respectfully disagree with that. Daris may have gained two pounds, but he did it honestly at home. Koli did not play by the same rules that everyone else did, and for that reason I want to see Daris in the Final 3. I think Koli is a great person, but I don't care for his "strategy". I would also like to see Daris come back and show that he got back on track at home again before the finale.
Next week is the big night...and for me, here's hoping that it will be Ashley, Michael, and Daris competing for the Grand Prize. No matter what, they have all inspired me and done a wonderful job of changing their lives for the better!

Believe It, Be It!!!
***photo courtesy of Biggest Loser/NBC.I read a lot of inspirational and motivational books, because they always help me reach further and move closer to my goals. This week I read Ali Vincent's new book, "Believe It, Be It". I have to tell you, this book is amazing. Ali takes us through her journey...starting with her childhood and going all the way through becoming the first female Biggest Loser, and beyond.
I see lot of myself in Ali's story. We didn't have all of the same problems in life to deal with, but there are several similarities in the way we approach things and some of our issues, especially our weight struggles and the determination to make a difference in the world. After reading about Ali's life, I am ready to kick it up a few notches on my own journey.
I'm finding ways to sneak in exercise, where before I wouldn't have even thought of it. Since I am in front of the television recapping dance shows, during commercials I have started getting up to dance or jog in place. Even all of the little extra bits of exercise add up, and get me closer to my goal. I'm planning my meals and snacks out better, so I don't wind up grabbing anything because I'm starving after writing at my computer all day. I am really working on finding healthier ways of doing things, which will get me where I need to go.
I HIGHLY recommend Ali's book. I couldn't put it down, and every page was a revelation to me. You will be inspired and motivated toward your goals...in weight loss and in life!

Motivational Monday..Whoo-hoo!!!

Since last week I only lost a single pound, I was really, really hoping and praying for a much better result this week. I stepped up my exercise, stayed consistent with my water intake, and really watched my food choices. I spent a lot of time gazing at my motivation board, and reading whatever I could to keep me inspired.
As I stepped on my good (?) friend the scale, I was still praying for a great number. We all know how there are weeks that you do everything right, but it doesn't show on the scale. Well...I'm extremely happy to report that I lost 2.6 pounds this week! This brings me oh so close to 200...200.4 to be exact. I'm so close to the 100's that I can smell it. I'm sure I'll be doing a little Samba the day I get there!
My motivational person for this week is Ali Vincent, the first female Biggest Loser. As we watch the new season, let us also think about how much Ali has inpired us and continues to do so. You can keep up with this incredible woman at http://alivincent.com/ . If we believe in ourselves, we can all do it!
Let's all make this week even better than the one before...and blast that fat!!!
